Decades of Interior Design Trends

1990s

America entered into a recession, increasing unemployment rates sent homeowners back to the basics. Homes were more of a refuge than a showplace. People wanted design that featured simple lines. Characterized by white kitchens, stainless steel, light wood and neutral color palettes, interiors took a turn toward present-day Scandinavian styles.

Meanwhile, Martha Stewart taught everyone the value of little, but fabulous, decorative touches. (We’re still in awe of that credit-card mosaic pool.)

2000s to Present Day

As the century has turned, modern design has been incorporating nostalgia and forward-thinking perspectives: designers are taking the best from previous decades. Homes are often centered around more open, multipurpose spaces–say a large kitchen that flows into a family/TV room. Nowadays, a home office may be far more important to you than that formal dining room your grandmother was so proud to have. Decor-wise, we’re seeing synthetic and natural materials. Stylistically, we’re seeing inventive combinations of “retro” and “up-cycled” with the latest in tech gadgets. It’s a great approach. A perfect vintage accent or a handcrafted piece can provide a warm balance to that new hi-def television.

From custom detailing and interior planning to furniture selection and lighting design, we love how it’s all unfolding. And as proud as we are of our company’s long history, we’re even more excited about what the future holds.
