Is everyone over the Fifty Shades of Grey hullabaloo? Let me be the last to say, NOT ME! As a moviegoer, I’ll note that I am marginally interested in the blockbuster hit, but as an interior designer and a watcher of trends, I’ll admit that I covet gray.
In the past, I think the color gray may have been the victim of bad press. Gray hair is meant to be colored. Gray skies portent rainy days and gloom. Gray is the color of the much-maligned field mouse.
Then something happened….. Gray got a reprieve. Gray is, indeed, having its day.
From an interior designer’s point of view, gray is the perfect playmate. Obviously, it’s not one hue. Gray can delve deep and brush up against charcoal or soar with the doves, dove gray that is. Metallic grays span from cool icy silver to pewter, warm and burnished. Cool-warm, light-dark, gray goes everywhere….and with everything.
Pair gray wood furniture with jewel tones like emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Visualize it! Think pink, mint and powder blue in step with gray. It all works….such is the versatility of gray!
Many furniture makers are actually taking gray in all-new directions.
Many interior designers are not content with merely pairing gray with a diverse palette of colors. We are using new hues of gray……spruce gray, green gray, brown grey, and taupe. Very stunning!! There is Greige, which will turn your head when finished with a nice sheen. While I love the weathered driftwood inspired grays, upping the sheen and polish will really grab you.
In the world of interior design, and especially at Ron Nathan Interiors, gray is not just a straightforward wood and metal story. There is a softer side – the world of fabrics – and gray offers enormous appeal. The rich textural fabrics add even more appeal to my new favorite color: Gray.
So to the cast and crew of “Fifty Shades of Grey”, I say, “what, only 50?”
