Whether you’re a great planner or you simply “go with the flow,” an interior design project still requires a great deal of organization. Taking the following tips to heart can help you to keep your design project on track.

Interior Design Project Tips

1. Make A Plan

Whether you’re starting with an overall decor or you just fell in love with a single piece that you now want to build a room around, come up with a finished image of your mind–what you’d like the final result to be. Turn this image into a concrete plan by writing down colors, furniture and decor before you begin. Don’t overlook the details, because something that seems minor–such as a hallway mirror–can change the entire feel of the room.

2. Make A Budget

What can you really afford? A good budget should be freeing, because your designer and contractor can tell you what they can do within that range. The next step: Set priorities, identify necessities and luxuries. Remember that a budget isn’t just about cost: it’s also about value for your money. So don’t just think about the end result. Include in your calculations how long do you intend on keeping the new interior. Is this a redesign that should last years? Or will you want to re-do things in a year or two, perhaps as kids grow up, or if you decide to sell. Will you want investment pieces or something a little more trendy but temporary? And don’t forget: It’s always good to leave a little leeway in the budget, to accommodate for unexpected costs and emergencies.

3. Make A Calendar

Once you have the budget and plan, calendar everything, from when the painters arrive to furniture delivery. Construction often takes longer than expected, so don’t rely it to be finished early. Even if it is a smaller project, make sure you add in extra time: For example, ask how long until the paint is really dry enough to hang anything on the wall. Schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings or calls to ensure you’re up-to-date on progress of the project. And all that goes double, if there is a specific event on your calendar that is the catalyst for the redesign (e.g., a home wedding). Bring that up during the very first meeting with a designer, to make sure you’ll be able to complete everything on time.

Great interior design starts before the blueprints. It begins with the design of the project. With a little planning, you’ll have a home to be proud of. Contact the team at Ron Nathan Interiors to start work on your interior design project today!
