Limited Space, Unlimited Imagination

“Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs

Unleash your creativity and imagination to help you decorate your small space with style. Since you’ll be able to see every aspect of your space, it’s important to consider not only functionality but also aesthetic appeal. As Lauren McPhillips says, “A small home allows for no wasted space, so be sure to make good use of every corner.”

Interior Design Tips

Think Vertical Storage

In a small home, floor space is at a premium, so look elsewhere when you need to expand. Hallways, nooks and open walls often present an opportunity for vertical shelving that you can simultaneously use as decorative storage. Extend the shelving as high as possible to draw the eye upward and give the illusion of a larger space.
Looking to achieve separation in a one-room space? Opt for open, floor-to-ceiling shelving. Not only will this extra storage space come in handy, but you’ll also be able to see through to any adjacent rooms. Use baskets on the bottom shelves to hide away toys, magazines, or books.

Think Sheer

It’s a known interior design tip: The more light you have in a space, the larger it will feel. While sheer curtains on windows are an obvious way to let in natural light, you can use sheers:

  • As a room divider
  • For privacy in a computer nook
  • Across an entire wall to give the illusion of a larger window

Being able to see across a room divided by a sheer curtain still allows the eye to travel the entire length of the space, and, let’s face it, it’s also an eye-catching way to add a unique decorative element. Sheers come in all colors, patterns, and designs, but if you’re feeling adventurous, add an extra punch with sequins or tassels!

While you may not have all the space in the world, a small home gives you the opportunity to think outside the box. Follow these interior design tips for minimal spaces to help make the most of what you’ve got.
