Beautiful Benches: An Artful Way to Add Style and Storage to Your Home

I often lay on that bench looking up into the tree, past the trunk and up into the branches. It was particularly fine at night with the stars above the tree. — Georgia O’Keeffe

How often do you contemplate the artistry of the simple bench? If you’re like most people, the answer is: not that often. But think about it. The bench might be the single most versatile piece of furniture, and it achieves this flexibility effortlessly. A bench is at once obviously functional (store your books, take a load off, etc.) and capable of enhancing subtle design elements. Benches create space out of nowhere, and they come in a staggering variety of styles and materials and price points.

So how and where might you be incorporate a bench (or multiple coordinated benches) into your home?

Try…

Benches in the Bedroom

Bedroom-BenchesSnuck at the foot of your bed or under a window, benches make great spare seating for putting on clothes or shoes or simply for relaxing at the end of a long day. A bench with built-in storage can hold spare blankets for chilly nights or clothing you don’t want to clutter up your closet in the off season.

Living Rooms

Living-Room-Benches-(2)Benches can fit neatly under windows, giving family and pets a place to perch and watch the world outdoors. They make quick and easy seating for parties, meetings, or informal get-togethers. A bench without upholstery – or an upholstered bench with the addition of a stylish tray – does double duty as a coffee table or as staging for food and drinks at a party. Benches can also be used to display cozy living room items, like an outstanding set of throw pillows. They also tend to be lighter and easier to move than clunky chairs or tables, allowing you effortless “scene changes” before and after parties.

Dining Rooms and Kitchens

Dining-Room-BenchUnexpected dinner guests? No problem! Pull up a bench, and instantly make more space at the table for those you love. In the kitchen, a bench allows visitors to sit and chat without getting in the way of your cooking and gives children chefs a place to stand to help you crack eggs and (safely) chop salads. Benches can also flex their multi-purpose muscles and double as storage for small appliances, little-used pans and tablecloths and towels.

Entryways

Entry-BenchSomething missing from your bald entryway or mud room? Add a bench! Guests can use it to take off their shoes. It can also reduce clutter by temporarily holding objects (like grocery bags or tennis rackets) being transitioned to or from the car, yard or garage. Store umbrellas, hats, other outdoor weather gear, children’s outdoor toys, the list goes on.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Outdoor-BenchA sturdy, weatherproof bench is a great year-round choice for decks, patios and other outdoor spaces. Lightweight benches can easily be moved around the yard for events. Or choose one with built-in storage to hold summer games, toys and barbecue utensils.
