Most folks will agree, especially when it comes to technology. The emergence of “Smart Home” technology is changing the way we live, so why shouldn’t it change the place where were live? The next decade will presents new challenges and new ways to think about interior design.
In a few years, you can say goodbye to those swatch books. There are dozens of new apps to design home décor in a way that would be unimaginable just a few years ago. One expert refers to it as “a Google-level” of personalization, that should allows us to customize right down to the individual.
But smart phone or iPad apps are just the beginning.
Motion recognition software now means that we can turn the lights off, change the channel, or start a cozy fire with a wave of the hand, literally.
Similarly, voice-recognition software is already changing home living. Using tools such as Alexa and Siri, we can “talk” with our appliances. Need to preheat an oven, or crank up the icemaker? Just say the magic words.
That just covers some of the ways we live. What about the places we live? TechCrunch, for instance, is confident that the era of 3D-printed homes is within sight:
Amsterdam boasts the 3D Print Canal House, a 13-room building and museum built entirely by a giant 3D printer, called the KamerMaker. The KamerMaker 2.0 is currently underway, and prints an area about as tall as a water bottle every second. An Italian engineering company is also working on building a 3D-printed house, and believes similar ones could be built in developing countries where sturdier structures are needed.
Technology is changing the way we choose furnishing for homes, too. Virtual reality headsets are already offering the prospect of 3D tours of homes. Like the look of that end table, but not sure it will fit in the living room? Strap on your VR headset, and “see” for yourself.
