Choosing The Right Rug

In Blog by Ron Nathan

Area rugs are one of the most important components of a room. They pull everything together and create a finished look. But how do you choose the right one? With so many options, this can be daunting. We are here to help! Here are a few ground rules to get you started. First, take into account your lifestyle and needs. Do you have kids or pets? Will the rug be in a high-traffic area? If so, you should probably consider a dark colored hard wearing rug. Our recommendation is a wool rug…… easy to clean and long lasting. Also, make sure to trust your style instincts and don’t go with a trend. This rug will be around for a while, so make sure you will like it today and tomorrow. Obviously, you need to buy the correct size. For the family room, you need a size that is at least the length and width of your furniture. In a dining room, it should be large enough to allow chairs to be pulled out and still sit on the rug. Still not sure? Try taping out the size of the rug you are considering to get an idea of how it will look. Finally, if you already have furniture in the area you will place the rug, be sure the rug you purchase compliments the rest of the room, including artwork and accessories. We prefer to size the rug once we have done a scaled floor plan of the room. Also, when using a rug that is patterned with multiple colors, we prefer to start with the rug first. We can draw fabrics and wall color from the colors in the rug.
