YOUR BEDROOM – A GREAT PERSONAL PRIVATE SPACE

In Blog by Ron Nathan

A bedroom is a place where we want to feel at ease when waking in the morning and relaxing at night. Interior design is important so that you can blend your bedroom decorating ideas with bedroom themes, color and texture, fabrics, furnishings and artwork to create a desired atmosphere for your relaxing, sleep and waking needs.

As interior designers, we would want to create a haven of warmth, comfort and privacy and consider the many uses in addition to sleeping. Good bedroom design must consider if one needs somewhere to watch television, eat breakfast, talk on the phone, read a book, or use a computer,

We begin with a scaled layout in a floor plan. We can then determine the pieces of furniture needed apart from the bed itself. This can include a dresser, bedside tables, chairs or sofas, a desk or a table, exercise area, and television location. These pieces take on a life of their own…each playing both a practical and visual role. But in the end warmth, comfort and privacy are created through choice of colors, furnishings, lighting, and accessories to create mood.

Color

Color is such a powerful force that even a small amount can have dramatic effects. Touches of color can breathe life into a room. We like to use soft, warm colors overall and the pop can come from a dramatic piece of art, pillows, cushions, lampshades, floor covering, bedding, or window treatments. In combination these pieces can change a room from drab to glam!

Lighting

Lighting has a strong influence on mood. Soft, calm lighting is important for times when you just want to relax and good task lighting is also needed for activities such as reading, getting dressed, using a computer, writing, etc….Dimmer switches and lamps are a flexible way to change ambiance within a bedroom. A chandelier can be more dramatic and sconces add interest as well as light.

Window Treatments

Window treatments impact mood and should draw the theme of the room together. The best solution not only suits the style of the room but has the flexibility to allow light in, insulate, and provide privacy by using a clever combination of blinds, valences, draperies, or shutters.
