Decluttering Your Home’s Design As Well As The Actual Physical Space: An Interior Designer’s Insights Into Spring Cleaning

Perhaps you’ve already bought Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but you want to do more than straighten out your closets and dispose of some possessions. So let’s think about decluttering from an interior design perspective. With a few new ideas, you may finish spring cleaning with a spring in your step:

3 Hot Interior Design Trends

1. Hygge

Forget about feng shui. 2017 is all about hygge, according to Elle Decor. Hygge (pronounced “hoogah”) is a Danish concept that roughly translates to living in a simple, cozy environment. As one hygge expert explained, “Less is more.” Create an intimate environment through well-chosen pieces that are functional and space-saving. But don’t aim for an ultra-perfect house that looks like something out of a magazine. Add a few personal items you treasure. Make it all mean something to you. You want a house that you can live in, proudly and still comfortably.

2. Clean Up The Color Palette

Too many colors can make a room feel cluttered, even when it isn’t. The variety can overwhelm the eye, with different hues fighting for your attention. Find another place for that loved but clashing pillow. Or perhaps cluster vibrant knickknacks in one area, so the colors are more consolidated. If you’re thinking of changing the colors all together, popular colors for spring bring a taste of nature into the home. The Pantene color of the year is “greenery,” reminiscent of foliage. And House Beautiful’s team fell in love with walls painted in “mushroom” or “stone white”–neutral without being blah. For a bolder statement, consider shades of forest, sand or blues reminiscent of the sea.

3. Sort And Shelve

Let’s be honest: Clutter is about having too much stuff sitting around in the random places. Therefore, look at a room’s functionality, and make sure that the right items are in the right room. (Why are kids’ toys in the dining room? Is there a reason the knitting is in the home office?) Once things are in the right rooms, aim for everything having a proper place. If you need to, add new storage, shelving or closet organizers. But the key is that things must be accessible. If it’s a hassle to maintain the system, you won’t bother using it, and suddenly the piles will start reappearing.

As Marie Kondo has said, taking control over your environment really can feel like magic. And spring is the perfect time to make some magic in your home. Take control over your environment today and contact the team at Ron Nathan Interiors.
