“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” – Juan Montoya

This year interior design is all about making bold statements with minimal effort. Look to these seven trends to guide you through your redesigns and remodels in 2016.

2016 Interior Design Trends

1. Statement Mirrors

Well-placed mirrors make small spaces look larger, but mirrors with back lighting, daring frames or fresh shapes make a reflective surface all the more attractive.

2. Black Metals

From stainless steel appliances to metal-framed furniture, black metals are all the rage. According to Houzz.com poll, “nearly two-thirds of Houzzers say they would consider the dark alternative to shiny silver metal.”

3. High-tech Bathrooms

Our phones and refrigerators are smart. Why can’t our bathrooms be? Well, they can, and high-tech lavatories are definitely having a moment. Digital faucets, heated toilet seats and waterproof TVs are making their mark on the bathrooms of 2016.

4. Low-tech Living Spaces

We all love technology, but families treasure gadget-free quality time. Simplistic living rooms are becoming more popular as people aim to unplug after hours and escape the tyranny of ubiquitous glowing rectangles.

5. Bringing the Farm Home

Weathered wood, bench-seat dining tables, huge farmhouse sinks and busy farm-style entries are just some of the ways decorators are bringing the simplicity (and functionality) of farm living to everyday spaces.

6. Huge Islands

No longer just extra counter space, islands can also function as storage centers, dining space, communing focal points — you name it. Topped with marble or rustic wood, islands are becoming an essential, not just an extra, to the modern kitchen.

7. Bold Textiles

From geometric patterns to bringing fabrics usually reserved for the outdoors inside, textiles are getting bold in their color, pattern and use. Bold prints — from colorful floral to high contrast black and white geometrics — are making their way into homes.

This trend also includes textile accents like old world tassels, cording and fringe. “People want the traditional and dressy, with a shot of nostalgia, to feel like everything is going to be OK,” said Tobi Fairley in the WSJ.
