kids-bedroom-design-tipsMost parents have no idea where to begin when they are ready to decorate their child’s bedroom. You want your child to have the best, including the things you never had. Your child’s room will influence their development. This is the reason it is so important to create a space both fun and comfortable. You will not have to break the bank to create the ideal room for your child.

Going Back to Neutrals

Even if your child adores orange, there is no reason to use this color for the walls or purchase orange rugs. You can still toss a few orange pillows on their bed or add a few accents in this color. The main color should be neutral. Your child’s tastes will change as they grow. It is much easier to replace a few accents with their new favorite color than to redesign the entire room.

Neutral is not a boring color. It simply provides you with a canvas to work with. You can make a dream room with colorful stuffed animals, bedding with polka dots, patterns or stripes. Hang pictures of their favorite characters and cartoons on the walls. You can keep the frames and simply change the pictures as they grow.

The Best Accessories

Every dream room needs core pieces. Go wild using bright accent colors, animal prints, geometric shapes and crazy patterns for curtains, pillows and blankets. Everything does not have to match, it just needs to appeal to your child. Accessories show off your child’s personality. You can even let your child select their bedding accessories. If they have a favorite sports team, love ballet, adore puppies or are into Pokemon, accessorize using what brings your child the most joy.

Dream Beds

Every child will adore a dream bed. The bed needs to be comfortable, but the right bed can be the focus of the room. You can turn your child’s room into an outdoor camping grounds. There are beds with canopies that look like tents. Add a moon lamp or some stars inside of the canopy to make your child feel like they are sleeping beneath the sky. Go crazy with accessories such as a canteen lamp and pictures of campfires or streams.

If your child dreams of being a racer, make their dreams come true with a racer bed. You can even place a slide right next to the bed so they can enjoy a fun ride in the morning. Purchase race-themed sheets and curtains to carry the theme throughout the room. Add racing accessories such as lamps, Hot Wheels or racing caps. You can even add a few pictures of their favorite racers.

If you have a little girl, she can sleep like a princess. Make her a fantasy bed with ruffles, satin, frills and bows. Add a much smaller but similar bed for her dolls. Disney makes a wide range of accessories you can use to add to the effect.

Both boys and girls love treehouses. Use silk or plastic plants to make a treehouse headboard. Go to your local craft store and be creative. Add colorful stuffed animals and birds for a jungle effect. Play soft jungle, river or rainforest sounds when they go to sleep.

Turn your child’s bed into their favorite vehicle. You can transport your little princess with a carriage bed or your prince with a rocket or tractor. Let your child choose the bedding and curtains they want to match to complete the fantasy. Add dollhouses or stick on planets and stars on the ceiling and just have fun.

If you have more than one child sharing the room, start out with bunk beds with stairs. Add a slide or any of the available options. You can decorate the room to make the beds look like a castle or a fort. Add steps with drawers for extra storage space, tea sets for little girls, imaginative games or soldiers. Your children will fall asleep in their fantasy worlds.

The Quiet Place

If your child loves to read, create a quiet place in their room. Add a cushioned bench or a squishy, comfortable chair where your child can read and let their imagination soar. Place accessories or pictures of your child’s favorite places or characters in the area to complete the effect.

Open Shelving and Storage

Use sturdy open shelving to create a dream wall. Make certain your child can reach all of the shelves easily. Your child can place their favorite stuffed animals, toys, books, games, etc on the shelves. Add a few bins or baskets so your child has somewhere to put all of the little things. You child will be able to see everything they love, learn about organization and fall asleep dreaming of their favorite things. As your child grows, they can place new things on the shelves so the room will grow with them.

The Art Gallery

If your child is a little artist, turn their room into an art gallery. Purchase frames in all different sizes and bright colors or simply paint them. You can purchase inexpensive frames at a thrift store. Attach picture wire across the back of the frames. Give your child some decorative clothes pins so they can hang up all of their latest creations. Make a sign that says my gallery and hang it on the wall. Feed the imagination of your little Monet.

The Wallpaper

Nothing creates a dream better than wallpaper. Take your child with you to the home improvement store and let them look at all of the wallpaper. They can choose wallpaper with kittens, puppies, outer space, ice cream cones, cowboys, circus clowns or anything that triggers their imagination. Accessorize the room to match the wallpaper for the ideal dream bedroom.

The Chalkboards

Choose a wall and cover it with chalkboards within your child’s reach. You can find chalkboards in all different styles and shapes. Add a basket filled with colorful chalk and let your child decide how they want their bedroom decorated every single day. This will give them the opportunity to use their creativity and imagination. You will be amazed at what your child can do with a simple piece of chalk.
