Fifteen Interior Design Ideas for 2020

Like nearly every other year, 2020 is bound to have its own trends when it comes to interior design. Some of them will be holdovers from years past while others are new. Here are 15 interior design ideas for 2020.

1. Storage That’s Aesthetically Pleasing

It is a rare person or family who doesn’t need more storage than they have, but storage does not have to be, frankly, ugly. The trend for 2020 is storage that is both pleasing to look at and blends well with the overall decor of the room.

2. Paint It Blue

The Pantone Color of the Year for 2020 is 19-4052 Classic Blue. It’s just the color for walls, floors, ceilings, furniture and even dinnerware. A rather bold shade of blue, it’s best used judiciously.

3. Patterns

Beside vibrant colors, patterns are the thing for 2020, especially those that are layered. Consider a plush sofa with patterned pillows placed against a wall with overstated wallpaper. Of course, there’s a patterned rug on the floor that harmonizes with the throw pillows, the wallpaper, or both.

4. Trompe L’Oeil

This phrase means “fool the eye,” and it is two-dimensional art that looks three dimensional. It’s been around for a long time: there’s a story about George Washington tipping his hat to a wall painting of boys on a ladder who he thought were real. In 2020 trompe l’oeil is seen in furniture, textiles and ceramics as well as paintings and wall paper.

5. To the Max

If minimalism ever was a thing in years past, it is no longer. Interior designers are urging clients to create rooms chock full of color, antiques, luxurious fabrics, chairs, sofas and beds to sink into, walls painted bright, bold colors (see above), or covered with vibrant wallpaper, floor-to-ceiling shelves full of books and bric-a-brac and rugs and carpets that feel delicious beneath bare feet.

6. Lots of Textures

2020’s interior design will see a lot more textures besides the smooth wood of furniture and the fabric of upholstery and carpeting. This year’s textures include faux-fur, marble, glass, steel, cowhide and even plastics. Rough-hewn wood, perennially popular in some types of decor, is popular everywhere in 2020.

7. Furniture Made From Ceramics

Ceramics was once confined to dinnerware, vases and smaller works of art, but now ceramic furniture is trending in 2020. This means tables, chairs and desks made out of ceramics that can tolerate a lot of use, such as stoneware. Many of these pieces of furniture are made by hand and can be the focal point of a room.

8. Eye-Catching Ceilings

Though there’s nothing at all the matter with a white ceiling, the trend in 2020 is toward ceilings that make a statement. These ceilings are painted primary colors that can include fire engine red, have coffers and moldings or resemble the pressed tin ceilings of yore. Some people may even put wallpaper on their ceilings for a really startling look.

9. Unusual Door Hardware

Why stay with the same old doorknobs, bars and pulls? 2020 is the year that the door and drawer hardware comes into its own. The types of unique hardware are almost countless and range from the traditional cut lead crystal knobs to egg-shaped knobs made out of resin to pulls carved out of mahogany in the shape of hands or carved and painted to resemble eyeballs.

10. Blocky Furniture

There are years where curved and feminine furniture was all the rage, but 2020 is not one of those years. Now the trend is for blocky but not ponderous furniture. Think of building blocks put together in interesting and pleasing ways and upholstered in lustrous fabrics such as velvet and suede in bright colors.

11. Sustainability

Items that are sustainable are also the trend for 2020. This can mean plant fibers that are harvested sustainably. They include cork, which is excellent for flooring. Cork is the outer layer of a special type of oak tree found in the Mediterranean. It is stripped off of the tree every few years, but the tree does not need to be killed and grows another layer of cork. Bamboo is also sustainable. Though it is used like hardwood, bamboo is actually a type of grass. A stalk of bamboo can grow 100 feet in only a few years, while an oak tree can take decades to reach that height. Other materials include rattan and sea grasses.

12. Portable Lighting

Lighting that would usually be hardwired into the ceiling or the wall is now movable thanks to swags that take the place of ugly naked wires and can add their own aesthetic touch to the decor. Movable lighting also helps set the mood in a room and can be easily adapted to a major change in the decor. This can’t be said for that pendant light that’s been in the ceiling for decades.

13. Luxurious But Natural Materials

One 2020 trend is for materials that are luxurious but natural. This can include silk or silk wool blends for upholstery and carpeting and natural stone such as marble or granite for countertops, table tops and flooring.

14. Handmade Items

Handmade or artisanal items such as furniture, rugs and artwork have been the trend for at least a couple of years, and it continues into 2020. These are the items, whether a beautifully made chair or even a terra-cotta pot for plants, that allow the buyer to come face to face with the craftsman and see the care and artistry with which the item is made. These items can become very cherished and even passed down as heirlooms.

15. No More White Kitchens

Interior designers have been warning against the all-white kitchen for years, but this year, they mean it. Although white kitchens may be pretty, but they are murder to keep clean and can look more like operating theaters than the heart of a home. The trend for 2020 is two toned kitchens, which usually means a white backsplash and white counters with dark cabinets. These cabinets are neutral colored, for the days of cabinets painted bright yellow, blue, green or red are as passé as the kitchen that’s all white.
