How Technology is Changing the Art and Science of Interior Home Design (Part 2)

Although web-centric tech conferences like SXSW grab headlines, even fields as “artsy” as interior design are changing—and rapidly—due to technology innovation. In part 1 of this short series, we discussed how Virtual Reality (VR) and smart interiors are changing how people build. Today, we explore four additional tech-inspired earthquakes shaking the interior design landscape.

3D Printing

The proliferation of 3D printing allows designers to generate ideas in miniature form within a few hours. Clients can view the interiors and make adjustments, or the designer can show different plans for the same space. A few companies are already producing custom-made furniture via 3D. Within the next few years, interior designers might provide the same services for clientele. With 3D printing, bespoke furniture, lamps and crafts become readily available. Is there a part missing on a restoration? No problem–print it!

Digital Walls and Ceilings

Exactly what shade of paint or wallpaper pattern adorns a wall becomes immaterial when it is digital. There’s an app for that, so you can leave a blue bedroom in the morning and come home to a yellow one at night. An interior designer can provide clients with a range of color palettes complementing the draperies, artwork and furniture. Once these are in place, clients can change wall and ceiling shades and wallpaper patterns to suit seasons, moods, or events.

Working Virtually

Remote work is increasingly becoming the norm, and that’s true in the interior design field, linking designers, clients and brands. Working interactively, designers can focus on clients far from their geographic region. Then designers can work on custom pieces with colleagues halfway across the globe. This virtual work saves time and money.

Enhancing Collaboration

Technology offers a brave new world for interior design. It also makes clients more comfortable, because they really do know what to expect. It enhances the collaborative process between designer and client, and allows both to fully participate in a beautiful home’s creation.
