The Most Fascinating Interior Designer Trends of 2017… So Far

Consciously or not, interior design trends always reflect the world we live in, and there’s no question these are interesting times. The most fascinating interior design trends emerging this year balance high tech with back to nature. While yearning for the future, we also long for something more simple and more pure.

Top 2017 Interior Design Trends

Tech Rules

Homes are getting smarter, and devices such as voice-activated assistants work at your command–literally. Activate them with a special phrase, and these tech assistants spring to attention, interacting with other smart interfaces. Tell your “assistant” to turn on the air conditioning, start the lawn sprinklers, dim the lights–you need never lift a finger.

Back to Nature

Tech becomes more prominent in interior design, but nature doesn’t settle for second place. As explored in Interior Design, colors from nature’s palette dominates this year’s painting and décor themes. As technology rules more of our lives, natural colors both soothe and remind us of the Earth’s true beauty. That doesn’t mean nature’s rawness isn’t realized: Another top trend includes using rougher materials, such as lava stone, for decorative and practical purposes.

Bathroom Updates

Another top trend brings the outdoors in—to a degree. That’s configuring the shower to give users a view of nature while enjoying their water cascade. Of course, such indoor “outdoor” showers are only suitable for places with sufficient privacy. That’s the beauty of the Garden State–it’s full of rural enclaves where such showers fit in perfectly.

Lighting Fixtures as Art

It used to be that the question was how to get track lighting to best illuminate the paintings or sculpture. But now, designers are collaborating with sculptors so, no longer is the lighting simply a tool: Now, the lighting fixture itself is art. As seen here, this could mean a sculpture of light across the wall, or a unique display of overhead lighting. Each piece has its own dynamic flair, but combined they make a dramatic statement that is a potent as anything else in the room.

The Laundry Room–No Longer Forgotten

The most utilitarian rooms in a house–the kitchen and bathrooms–long ago received treatment upgrades. Now it’s the laundry room’s turn. Besides high-end washers and dryers, homeowners are adding tile floors and attractive shelving and cabinetry to spruce up these unglamorous but necessary spaces.

These are just some of this year’s top design trends. There’s certainly a lot more in store for 2017 … just hold on. Contact the team at Ron Nathan Interiors to learn more.
